Canton's Crown Jewel

Writer: James Lawson James Lawson

Canton, Ohio is known for being the "Football Hall of Fame" city. However, it is also known for its crown jewel, the Palace Theatre which is one of the few remaining atmospheric theatres.

The Theatre was designed by the noted Austrian-born architect, John Eberson of Chicago, who achieved fame during the 1920s through his creation of “atmospheric” theatres located in cities across the United States, including Akron’s Civic Theatre. The Palace seeks to re-create a Spanish courtyard on a midsummer night. Its ceiling, a starry night with wisps of clouds, creates a dream effect. The Palace still has the original cloud machine that makes the clouds march continuously across the sky. It is acoustically a great venue for a live musical concert in a special atmosphere.

Gospel Music-Live promotions staged many live concert events at the Palace over its 50-year anniversary of promoting Southern Gospel music. Many legendary Southern Gospel artists have graced its stage, such as, James Blackwood, JD Sumner, Lily Fern Wetherford, George Younce, Glen Payne, Brock Speer, Ben Speer, Jack Pittman, Les Beasley, Ed Hill, Anthony Burger, Tracy Stuffle, Aaron Wilburn, Derrel Stewart, and the list goes.

This year, 2023, Gospel Music-Live returns to its roots as we are excited to stage two special events at the Palace. The first, will feature the award-winning Collingsworth Family on April 28th at 7PM. The second will be something big, on September 9th at 6PM, to be announced soon, so save the date.

Most of all, I would like to thank our loyal patrons down through the years for your support and prayers; you have been a blessing to me. Let's finish strong as we continue to bring Christian musical events to the Northeast Ohio area.
